The Heart Is Where The Home Is
The place within us where we can set it all down 🏡
As I pack up pieces of one chapter and begin creating another, I've found myself wondering what it is that actually makes somewhere feel like home. We typically think of home as a place: an address, familiar rooms, belongings arranged around us. And while there is something sacred about creating a physical space that feels like our own, I've come to understand that home is a feeling before it is a place.
Home, to me, is where I can lay my head to rest, but I mean that more figurative than literally. It's where I can relax my mind, set my concerns down, and soften the part of myself that feels the need to stay alert to what's coming next.
Home is where I can exhale.
I've experienced that feeling in places that are far from anything familiar. I've found it with the people I love, in moments of stillness, and in the familiar rhythm of my own breath. But the more I experience life, the more I understand that these things don't create home within me. They can help me access it, deepen it, and become beautiful extensions of it, but they are not its source.
There is something incredibly meaningful about building a home with another person, filling rooms with pieces of two lives and creating new rituals together. I'm excited for all that this new chapter holds. But my home isn't another person, an address, or a set of circumstances. Home is the place inside myself where I know I can return, wherever I am and whatever life looks like around me. My home lives within me.
We say, "Home is where the heart is." But lately, I've been thinking about it the other way around. The heart is where the home is. Because wherever I can return to myself, quiet my mind, and set down what I've been carrying, I am home.
We don't have to ask another person to become our home. We get to bring the home we've created within ourselves and build something new together. Maybe that's what makes creating a home with someone else so beautiful.
